Foreign governments slow to congratulate Ortega

Despite the opposition’s refusal to recognize President Daniel Ortega’s 62.6 percent reelection victory on Sunday, several friendly governments have started to slowly congratulate the Sandinista leader on his contested reelection.

Cuba and Venezuela led the pack, followed by ALBA allies Bolivia and Ecuador.

The governments of Peru, El Salvador and Taiwan congratulated Ortega this afternoon, shortly before his victory speech.

As of midnight Tuesday, no nations from Europe or North America have recognized Ortega’s victory. Nor has any Central American nation except for El Salvador.
