Montealegre undergoes bypass surgery

(posted Feb. 7, 4:15 p.m.)- Opposition leader and lawmaker Eduardo Montealegre is reportedly recovering satisfactorily after undergoing successful bypass surgery Tuesday morning in Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, according to a press release by the Independent Liberal Party (PLI).

The surgery was programmed after doctors discovered the coronary obstruction during a routine medical examination several weeks ago.

Montealegre, who finished runner-up in the 2006 presidential elections to Daniel Ortega and lost the 2008 mayoral election for Managua, was reelected congressmen last November.

The release said he plans to return to Nicaragua soon after his recovery.
