(posted March 22, 11:05 a.m.)– El Salvador’s Foreign Minister Hugo Martínez met yesterday evening in Managua with President Daniel Ortega to discuss ways to strengthen economic and trade relations between El Salvador and Nicaragua.
“We spoke about strengthening bilateral relations, but also about strengthening the Central American Integration System (SICA) and how to harvest the fruits of all these efforts that we have been promoting over the past years,” Martínez said.
Ortega said the two countries want to increase bilateral cooperation in areas such as agriculture, education, health and environmental and food security.
“With this visit from El Salvador’s foreign minister, we are ratifying our will to intensify relations between these two sister countries, with the objective of fighting to overcome poverty among our people,” Ortega said.
The two countries also spoke of the need to work together on security issues, and the importance of fighting organized crime without decriminalizing drugs in Central America.
