Ombudsman accused of threatening man’s life

(posted March 4, 10:20 a.m.)- Nicaragua’s truculent and churlish human-rights ombudsman is being investigated by police for allegedly threatening a man with a pistol in a kindergarten parking lot, according to El Nuevo Diario.

Omar Cabezas was accused yesterday of pulling out a gun and threatening the life of Geovanny Antonio Duarte, a chauffeur who was dropping a kid off at kindergarten. Duarte says Cabezas accused him of cutting him off in traffic outside the Colegio Alemán Nicaragüense.

Cabezas, a former Sandinista guerrilla comandante known for his hotheadedness, acknowledges the argument but denies that he pulled out a gun.

This would not be the first time that Cabezas has lost his cabeza.

The ombudsman, whose term in office expired over a year ago but remains at his post under a controversial presidential decree, is known for his temper, controversial comments and questionable judgment.

“Fire from the mountain” Cabezas? How can we forget the poignant passage whereby he describes masturbating in the jungle because he was bored with all the green? Say it’s not so, Omar.
