Congressman seriously injured in car wreck

(posted May 21, 11:35 a.m.)- Sandinista congressman Carlos Emilio López, 44, is reportedly in delicate condition in Managua’s Military Hospital after a serious car accident Sunday afternoon. His young daughter was also injured in the crash.

López, president of the legislative Commission on Women and Children and the former state prosecutor for children’s rights, reportedly drove off the Carretera Masaya at Kilometer 27.5 and crashed his Toyota sedan into a Chilamate tree, totaling the car. The cause of the accident is still unclear, according to reports in the daily newspapers.

The lawmaker reportedly suffered serious injuries to his legs, head and thorax; he was pinned in the vehicle and had to be cut free by first responders, who rushed him to the hospital where he reportedly underwent emergency surgery.

The condition of his daughter has not yet been made public.
