Rivas: 18 parties in muni elections

(posted May 6, 8:30 a.m.)- Nicaragua’s de facto electoral chief Roberto Rivas announced that 18 political—three regional parties and 15 national parties—have signed up to participate in next November’s municipal elections.

Rivas, who has remained in his post for more than a year after his constitutional term limit expired and been accused of manipulating the past three elections to benefit the ruling party, warned that any parties that boycott the elections will lose their legal party status.

Rivas also spoke of the need to clean-up the national voting registry by eliminating citizens who have not voted in the past three elections. Rivas urged the National Assembly to approve President Daniel Ortega’s electoral reforms sent to the legislature last week.
