(posted Oct. 2, 5:00 p.m.)- Nicaragua reports an 11.8% increase in tourist arrivals during the first eight months of this year, compared to 2011, Nicaraguan Tourism Institute (INTUR) spokesman Julio Videa told La Prensa today.

Overall, tourism in Central America registered 6.8% growth during the first trimester of 2012, according to comparative numbers reported this week by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL). Mexico’s tourism industry, in comparison, is up only 1.3%, according to CEPAL.

If Nicaragua maintains its double-digit rate during the final trimester of the year, it will finish 2012 with 1.2 million tourist arrivals, better than INTUR’s initial projections at the beginning of the year.

In January, Tourism Minister Mario Salinas told The Nicaragua Dispatch that he projected 6-8% growth in tourism this year, for a total of 1.1 million tourist arrivals.

Good for Nicaragua. I have seen all of the promotions and advertising in the U.S. and something must be working. Now maybe we can fix the roads??

I have lived in Nicaragua for three years and when I first moved here from Texas my friends did not want to visit and they thought I was crazy to move here that it was not safe and dirty and everything was old. Over the past year I have noticed their perception changing and some friends have seen the good advertising and they are coming to visit.

INTUR and the rest IMHO have done a good job in turning Nicaragua into a real destination suitable for a wide variety of visitors. When we sit down for breakfast with our guests, I hear so many reasons on why people visit Nicaragua that I would not have thought of myself. That bodes well for the country because it really does offer experiences unequaled elsewhere.
